John Michael Mihalek, a first-generation college student from rural southwest Pennsylvania, grew up on his grandparents’ farm alongside his mom and sister. Active in many activities throughout childhood—including tennis, soccer, karate, choir, marching band, musicals, and 4-H—he discovered his true passion for running during his senior year of high school. This passion led to collegiate competition in distance events. He still competes in races from the mile to 50-mile ultramarathons.
While competing for Indiana University of Pennsylvania, John Michael earned a B.A. in Psychology and Nutrition. His interest in athletes’ mental health took shape early in his college career, leading him to join the McNair Scholars Program. Through this program, he completed research on athletes’ grit and motivation as well as on intrusive thoughts related to eating disorders.
John Michael began his graduate studies at Springfield College, then transferred to the University of North Texas where he earned an M.S. in Kinesiology: Sport Psychology. His doctoral work began at Penn State University before transferring to WVU in 2022. Alongside his academic pursuits, John Michael has coached runners at the high school, college, and private levels, staying connected to the running community.
Though his academic path has taken many turns, John Michael values every step of the journey. He is currently applying to Physician Assistant school and looks forward to sharing the lessons he’s learned with first-year students.
